LAS VEGAS -- As Buddy Hields range ballooned past the 3-point arc over his college career -- with his big smile winning over teammates and administrators alike around Oklahomas Norman campus -- Lon Kruger made sure all that went into being Buddy wasnt lost along the way. Domata Peko Jersey .Not the late-night workouts with reggae music booming off the gym walls. Not the unwavering self-confidence that fueled his transition to a knockdown shooter. Our message to Buddy all year was, Dont change, dont change, said Kruger, the Sooners head coach, in a phone interview. When you start getting those national accolades and recognition and player of the year conversations, dont change, dont change.Even when he received the awards, we said dont change anything. When you get drafted, dont change anything. Youve got something unique and special as a personality. When you get to the NBA, dont change anything.Such a player would seem like an easy fit in a league trying to cash in on an everyman capable of superhuman shot-making. Like?Stephen Curry, Buddy enters his pro career with a ready-made persona,?a backlog of big-game highlights -- including besting a Mini-LeBron in?Ben Simmons?with the almighty 3 -- and the ability to walk the line between charm and confidence. Hes a supremely gifted athlete who also pulled himself up by the boot straps.Hes your buddy, but hes also an on-court killer who idolizes -- and now shares an agent with -- Kobe Bryant. The qualities Buddy has are the ones youd want everyone to have, Kruger said. What I think balances it is sincerity and maybe the work ethic. His peers like him, the coaches like him, the administration likes him, the people in town like him. Its not like he flaunts anything. Its not like he gives off that hes entitled. Its not like hes expecting anything back. Buddys a giver. Which is pretty rare when you think of a player with those abilities. The Buddy brand also comes complete with three self-given alter egos: Buddy Fresh, which hes prone to belt out to spark self-motivation; Buddy Love, which is for the ladies, as he recently told The Starters; and Buddy Buckets, which on draft day lined his suit jacket in Bahaman colors.Ive got good branding skills, he said with a smirk. Attracts the crowd a lot too.Even Buddy is an alias. His mother, in what is now Hield lore, saw a likeness between her infant son and the character Bud Bundy from Married ... with Children, and so his given name Chavano became Buddy. Those who know him well agree it fits.Hes always had that swag, said Sacramento Kings rookie Isaiah Cousins, Hields former roommate at Oklahoma. Its just a part of his culture. His first taste of the NBA, though, hasnt exactly aligned with expectations. In five games at the Las Vegas Summer League, Hield shot worse from the field (32.7 percent) than he did from behind the 3-point arc (46 percent) in his meteoric senior season at Oklahoma. His healthy scoring average of 16.8 points per game places him near the top in Las Vegas, but even Hield admitted after his games here that he hasnt shot this poorly in years.Ill be fine, he said after his fourth game in Las Vegas, in which he went 5-for-17. Its just a learning curve for me. Im not worrying. Im just a little pissed off right now. I didnt get summer league how I wanted it to go. But I gotta keep grinding, man.Hield has shown a willingness to pass, as the sharpshooter has notched five assists in each of the final three games at summer league. And he always seems to be the one loudly encouraging a teammate -- or himself -- on the court. But Hield struggled to handle the ball in the face of pressure and to get separation off the ball. While Hield gives effort on defense, one NBA scout questioned Hields impact on that end of the court -- given his lack of length and instincts. Both Hield and assistant Robert Pack, New Orleans head coach at summer league, noted the extra attention defenses are posting against Hield, given his notoriety and the options around him. In the petri dish that is summer league, the Pelicans used Hield at times to operate the pick-and-roll, but hell more likely be asked to spot up and stretch the floor for the big league club.Everybody just guarding me tight, Hield said. Ive been getting attention as soon as I stepped onto summer league. Everyones just been guarding me tight. Im just trying to find my way. It is what it is, man. Keep grinding, keep getting better. Thats what summer league is for: to learn. When we get back to training camp, guys like Anthony Davis will open the floor more for me. So Im not worrying about it. Ill be fine. The early struggles present a familiar arc. Though Hield said he was always a shooter, Kruger explained that Hield arrived at Oklahoma as more of a slashing, attacking guard. In four years, he grew from a 24 percent 3-point shooter on less than one attempt per game to 46 percent on almost nine such shots a game.He knew from the start that he wanted to improve the shot, improve the mechanics, raise it up a little bit -- and then just spent time, Kruger said. Theres no shortcut with anything. Buddy invested the time and put up the shots. One Pelicans staffer said he is bound to learn reggae by the amount that has been bumping at the practice facility court leading into the New Orleans rookies first minicamp. Hield also told Sports Illustrated that hes not looking to take any time off before the start of training camp, in order to rectify his disappointing debut.Amid his summer league slump, Hield was asked if he ever reverts back to the downhill player he was when he arrived at Oklahoma. He proceeded to talk up a 39-point effort against Iowa State in last seasons Big 12 tournament, during which he made just two 3-pointers.Then the usually fast-talking Hield paused.I just find the way in life, he said. Billy Turner Jersey . LOUIS -- Rookie Tavon Austin has missed another day of practice, lessening the odds hell be ready for the St. Shannon Sharpe Jersey . He just needed to be his best twisting, turning acrobatic self. "I didnt need to be anybody else, I just needed to be myself and be aggressive," said Burks, who scored a career-high 34 points to spark the Utah Jazz to a 118-103 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Monday night. http:///...marshall-jersey.html . Its the second straight game Bell has scored in extra time for Kelowna, which beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-5 on Friday, and he now has four game-winning goals on the season.WINNIPEG -- As an undersized special-teams player, Wade Miller continually had to prove himself over 11 seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Its the same approach the five-foot-nine Winnipeg native is taking as the Bombers new chief executive officer. Miller, 40, was named the Bombers acting CEO as the struggling CFL club cleaned house Friday, firing GM Joe Mack and president/CEO Garth Buchko. "Since the age of 23, Ive been rolling up my sleeves, getting it done and delivering results," Miller said. "And yes, I even welcome the term acting CEO, because Im not afraid to prove myself and let my results speak for themselves. "To our fans, I want you to know Im committed to the heavy lifting required to put us on a new path and affect the kind of change that will lead us into a new direction. These arent empty words." Macks dismissal wasnt surprising as Winnipeg (1-5) is last in the East Division and 21-39 overall since he was hired in 2010 as GM and vice-president of football operations. But Buchkos departure -- he had been named president and CEO in January 2012 -- and subsequent hiring of Miller certainly were unexpected. The moves came a day after word leaked out of Winnipeg that Buchko had recently advised the teams board of directors to fire Mack. That didnt sit well with team chairman Brock Bulbuck, who announced the sweeping changes at Fridays news conference. "Not only was the unauthorized release of information extremely unfortunate, it was unethical and left Joe Mack in a position that we all find abhorrent," Bulbuck said. "Though we may never determine whether, in fact, a board member leaked the information or who it was, you can count on the fact that we take the situation extremely seriously. "If discovered we will take immediate corrective action to ensure that this type of behaviour is not tolerated in this organization." Miller boldly predicted there will be no such leaks on his watch. "It simply wont happen and I look forward to ensuring that it doesnt," he said. "We will work to ensure that those things do not occur again." Miller, who retired as a player in 2006, wasted no time getting started in his new role. Shortly after his appointment he phoned Mack, who was scouting NFL training camps, to tell him he was no longer with the organization. "Im an individual that moves quickly," Miller said. "A GM has the responsibility to win football games. "Lets call a spade a spade, under Joe Mack the record speaks for itself." Miller said he has spoken with head coach Tim Burke but hasnt yet met with assistant GM Kyle Walters, who was out of the office Friday. And the new CEO made it clear the buck stops with him. "Ive been given the mandate to be the CEO of the organization and I will run the organization the way it needs to be run," he said. "I will look to the board for counsel but I will make those decisions." Miller appeared iin 167 career games with Winnipeg after being selected in the fourth round of the 95 CFL draft out of the University of Manitoba. Jake Butt Jersey. The backup fullback was twice an East Division all-star and is the franchise leader in special-teams tackles with 184. Twice he led the league in that category. In 1996 and 97 Miller received the Ed Kotowich Good Guy Award, given annually to the Winnipeg player who best combines football ability with community service. He was inducted into the Bombers Hall of Fame in 2011 and is also the chairman of the clubs alumni association. Miller has also excelled off the field. Hes the founder and CEO of Pinnacle, a staffing solutions company, and oversees the physiotherapy division of Elite Performance, a sports-specific training and rehabilitation firm. He also owns Booster Juice franchises in Winnipeg. "Driven by his entrepreneurial ambitious spirit, Wade likes to build winning teams and were giving him the mandate to do just that," Bulbuck said. "Whether its in the locker-room, boardroom or reaching out into the community. "In him we believe weve found an unbeatable combination of passion, commitment and experience to set the Winnipeg football club on a new path." Mack was in his second stint with Winnipeg. He was the player-personnel director of the Bombers 84 Grey Cup-winning team and also earned a Super Bowl ring with the 92 Washington Redskins. Mack left Winnipeg in 87 to become a scout with the NFLs Atlanta Falcons before becoming Washingtons personnel director. He also spent time with the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns. Mack didnt enjoy immediate success upon returning to Winnipeg. The Bombers were a dismal 4-14 in 2010 but finished atop the East Division in 2011 with a 10-8 record. Winnipeg dropped a 34-23 decision to the B.C. Lions in the 2011 Grey Cup then started the 2012 campaign by losing its first four games. Mack fired head coach Paul LaPolice following the clubs 2-6 start but the general consensus following that move was if the club continued to struggle, Mack would be the next to go. Macks most questionable decision was to stick with veteran Buck Pierce at quarterback. When healthy, Pierce has shown he can lead the offence but he has been plagued by injuries since joining the Bombers in 2010. Pierce is now No. 3 on the depth chart behind new starter Justin Goltz and first-year CFL player Max Hall. "Im going to focus on football first to bring back the history and winning attitude we used to have because thats what our fans not only expect but deserve," Miller said. "But I also want you to know in our new home (Investors Group Field) we have to grow this beyond football to ensure and take advantage of offering our community a full range of opportunities available in this sport and entertainment facility. "Now were going to make things right on the field and create the best fan experience possible and that includes a competitive team."
